The New Testament Documents, Are They Reliable?
by
F.F. Bruce
This was the first book the late Dr. Bruce wrote and despite its age it is wellworth the read as the author takes the reader through controversial issues that still rage today and leads them to the truth. It is well written, in a style that is easy to understand and he clearly deals with problems without the intellectual double talk and twisting sentences.
His points are honest and leaves no room for doubt as towhat he is saying and as an example, we find in the first chapter the following: "But the argument canbe appplied to the New testament ONLY IF (capitals mine) we ignore the real essence of Christianity. For the Christian gospel is not primarily a code of ethics or a metaphysical system; it is first and foremost good news..." (pgs. 1 & 2).
Dr. Bruce did what many after him have done and shown through the comparison of the number existing ancient documents of both the Bible and accepted secular works how the secular mind works when it comes to rejecting the works of the New Testament authors. Despite overwhelming mss. the secular world will still reject the Bible, and subject it to unrealistic criteria and demands while blindly accepting the works of secular authors, though those works have no existing original mss., or have only copies published centuries later, or are just quoted in other works. This double standard is very obvious and Dr. Bruce exposes it gently but firmly and shows the worthlessness of the secular world's arguments.
This style is practiced throughout the book which makes his message simple and easy to understand. The believer cannot go wrong by reading this book and it will help them in their Christian walk and when they face those who do not believe and seek to ridicule or dismiss the Bible.
