Fabricating Jesus
by
Craig A. Evans
It is always difficult to find the right words to critique a book that is written very well. This is such a book as Dr. Evans goes through different writers and scholars pointing out their errors and games. From the first chapter to the last the writing is steady, calm and clear as the author's points are well defined, supported and logically laid out.
In dealing with the topic of how scholars treat Jesus, Dr. Evans moves smoothly between modern scholars and ancient writers exposing their errors or mistakes and showing how they are wrong or apply their thinking poorly. He spends a lot of time on Dr. Ehrman's position and came to many of the same conclusions I had done in my review but Dr. Evan's questions Dr. Ehrman's reaction to the textual problems he encountered. The author comes to the conclusion that there is no logical reason why Dr. Ehrman questioned his faith as he should have been exposed to such topics throughout his early academic life at Moody and Wheaton colleges.
But this book doesn't focus solely on Dr. Ehrman as he analyzes the Jesus Seminar, pointing out inconsistancies and errors in their thinking. This is an insightful book, valuable to all pastors and missionaries who are acquainted with the popular works of those scholars who challenge the validity of the Bible, the inerrancy of scriptures and other areas under attack by those who choose alternatives to the Biblical record.
